About Farflung Game
Farflung Game is a free daily geography game played on a world map. Every day it offers five prompts, and players answer each one by pinning a country. Correct answers earn distance, and rarer answers earn more, so the game rewards curiosity about the less familiar corners of the map. It is an independent, fan-made project. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by any other game of a similar name.
Why we made it
Most geography quizzes have a single right answer. We wanted a game where every prompt has many right answers, and the fun is in finding the one nobody else thought of. Farflung is meant to take three minutes a day, to teach something new each round through its field notes, and to stay calm, free and easy to share.
How the prompts and tiers are made
Every prompt is written for this site, and each one comes with a complete list of the countries that fit. The bank currently holds 78 prompts across borders, coastlines, languages, international groups, landscapes and sport. Each of the 195 pinnable countries has a rarity tier, from Common to Farflung, based on how readily it comes to mind. A prompt can raise a country's tier when the fit is surprising. The tiers are editorial judgements and stay the same for every player, so scores are always comparable.
Maps and data
The world map is drawn from Natural Earth data, a public-domain map dataset, via the world-atlas project. It uses a flat Mercator projection so that countries at high latitudes are easy to tap. Borders and names are shown for gameplay only and are not a statement on any territorial dispute.
