Farflung — The Daily Geography Game

Five prompts. Pin a country. Rarer answers travel further.

What is the Farflung game?

The Farflung game is a free daily geography quiz played on a world map. A round takes about three minutes in any browser.

Five prompts, many right answers

Every day brings five prompts, such as “a country on the Black Sea”, “a NATO member” or “a country the Andes run through”. For each one you pin a country that fits. Most prompts have many correct answers: the obvious one only takes you a short way, while a country few people think of carries you much further.

Your score is a distance

Each correct pin adds kilometres to your journey, and a perfect expedition covers 500 km.

How to play the Farflung game

  1. Read the prompt. It describes a group of countries, like “A country that borders Tanzania” or “A country where Portuguese is an official language”.
  2. Find a country. Tap it on the map, or type its name into the search box. Drag to pan and pinch or use + and − to zoom.
  3. Drop your pin. Press Drop pin, or hit Enter, to lock in your answer. You can change your mind until then.
  4. Read the field notes. The map lights up every country that fit, coloured by rarity.

Share your Farflung result

After five prompts, the Farflung game shows your total distance and a row of coloured squares you can share with friends without spoiling the answers.

How Farflung scoring works

The five rarity tiers

Every correct answer belongs to one of five rarity tiers. The rarer the answer, the further it carries you:

TierDistanceExample
Common40 kmGermany for “A country where German is official”
Uncommon55 kmBelgium for the same prompt
Rare70 kmLuxembourg
Elusive85 kmVatican City for “A country that borders Italy”
Farflung100 kmLiechtenstein for the German prompt

Tiers are fixed ratings of how readily a country comes to mind, not live votes.

Misses and surprising answers

A wrong pin, a skipped prompt or running out of time scores 0 km. Sometimes a prompt raises a country's tier: the United Kingdom is usually Common, but it counts as Farflung for “shares a land border with Spain”, thanks to Gibraltar.

Daily, Unlimited and the clock

The Daily expedition

The Daily expedition is the heart of the Farflung game. Everyone gets the same five prompts, and a new set opens at midnight UTC. Finish on consecutive days to build a streak.

Farflung Unlimited

If one round isn't enough, Farflung Unlimited is an endless journey: prompts from a bank of 78 keep coming, your distance keeps growing, and you stop whenever you like.

Classic, Swift and Casual clocks

Before you set out, choose your clock: Classic gives you 60 seconds per prompt, Swift gives you 30, and Casual has no clock at all.

Why play Farflung?

Most geography quizzes ask for one right answer. The Farflung game asks for the best right answer, and that small change makes every prompt a choice between playing it safe and reaching further. The field notes after each prompt quietly fill the gaps in your mental map.

Tips for a longer Farflung journey

Look past your first answer

Your first thought is usually everyone's. When the clock allows, look for another.

Remember the microstates

Liechtenstein, San Marino, Andorra and Monaco answer many European prompts, and they carry you a long way.

Think about exclaves and overseas territories

Hidden borders score well: France borders Brazil through French Guiana, and Russia borders Poland through Kaliningrad.

Play it safe when in doubt

A miss scores nothing, so a sure Common pin beats a risky guess. Read the full how to play the Farflung game guide for more.
